On-call

On-call is the arrangement that makes one named person responsible for responding to incidents during a set period, often outside working hours.

Being on call means that for a set period, one named person is responsible for responding when something breaks, including at night and at weekends if the rota covers them. The naming is the whole mechanism. A team that is collectively responsible at 3am is a team where everyone assumes someone else saw the alert, and the alert nobody owned is the one still unhandled at 7am.

An on-call rota, or rotation, is the schedule that decides whose turn it is. Common shapes hand over weekly or daily, or follow the sun, passing responsibility between teams in different time zones so nobody is woken at night. Most rotas name a primary, who is paged first, and a secondary, who is paged if the primary does not respond, so a missed page still reaches someone.

An on-call system is the software that runs all this. It holds the schedules, works out who is on call at any moment, pages that person when an alert fires, and escalates to the next person if nobody acknowledges. The parts worth checking in one are how it reaches people (email, SMS, phone call or push), how easily someone can swap a shift, and whether a failed page is visible or silent.

A rotation that lasts needs more than software. Documented handovers tell the incoming person what has been unstable, written runbooks spare a responder from reverse-engineering a system at the worst hour, and time off after a bad night treats on-call as the work it is. The load is also a signal: a rota that pages twice a quarter is sustainable, while one that pages nightly is telling you about the system, not the responder.

The words that come with an on-call rota.
TermWhat it means
PrimaryThe person paged first for anything that fires during their shift.
SecondaryThe backup, paged when the primary does not acknowledge in time.
RotationThe order in which people take turns, and how long each turn lasts.
HandoverThe moment one shift ends and the next begins, ideally with a note on what has been unstable.
OverrideA one-off change to the rota, such as covering a colleague's shift.
EscalationPaging the next person, or using a louder channel, when nobody has acknowledged.
AcknowledgeTelling the system you have seen the page and are handling it, which stops further escalation.

Questions

What does on call mean?

It means being the named person who responds if something breaks during a set period, which usually includes nights and weekends as well as working hours. You keep your phone on you, stay within reach of a laptop, and are expected to acknowledge a page and start working on it promptly. How promptly is set by your team's own response target.

What is an on-call rota?

The schedule that says who is on call and when. A rota lists the people taking part, the order they take turns in and how long each turn lasts, often a week. Good rotas also name a secondary for each shift, and make it easy to swap a shift without rewriting the whole schedule.

What is an on-call system?

Software that holds the rota and acts on it. When an alert fires, it works out who is on call right now, pages them through the channels they have set up, and escalates to the next person if nobody acknowledges in time. It also keeps a record of every page, so a missed one can be found afterwards.

Do you get paid for being on call?

It depends on your contract and on local employment law. Some employers pay a flat allowance for each shift, some pay only for the time spent working on an incident, and some give time off instead. If your contract does not say, ask before you join a rota rather than after the first night.

How often should someone be on call?

That follows from the size of the rota. With a weekly handover, each person is on call once in every as many weeks as there are people on the rota, so a small team means frequent shifts. Adding people to the rota, or cutting how often it pages, is how teams make the load sustainable.

In Uptimely

Uptimely includes on-call on every plan, including the free one, which has room for 3 team members. Schedules rotate hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, with layers, restricted hours and overrides. Everyone a policy pages gets an email, and each person's own notification rules can add SMS, a phone call or a push notification, sent only to numbers and devices they have verified and, if they choose, only after a delay. SMS and calls stay off until they are switched on in Settings, and they are paid from a prepaid balance unless the project connects its own Twilio account.

Uptimely includes on-call schedules, escalation and paging on every plan, including the free one.
